I think it’s worth pointing out that 1/5 of the budget is going towards merchandising. Why not shave 20k off of the goal and try not to grab for cash so much??????

everything about this kickstarter is so messed up

7 minute cartoon, need 80k to make it, hosting it on a free video website, no animation skills or background in animating, too much of other people’s money going into merchandising; MERCHANDISING OF A 7 MINUTE CARTOON THATS GOING TO COST 80K MADE BY PEOPLE WHO CANT ANIMATE WHO ARE USING SOMEONE ELSES IDEA TO MAKE A GRAB FOR MONEY UUUUH

also there’ve been reports of animators being bullied off this project and not paid what they were promised, animators being asked to work for “exposure”, etc

just like… don’t donate to this project.

this is such train wreck of a kickstarter dont fund this

I barely remember day 1 of this thing popping up when I immediately thought to myself “ wow, this is STUPID.”

But I remember it and that’s what counts.

Audrey says “fuck your gender roles”

Also, I’d like to point out that she is eighteen canonically. She is, far and away, the youngest person on the expedition and she’s also in-fucking-valuable. She was given a supervisory position at Ford’s autoplant at age eleven and was involved with union and labor negotiations. If you know anything of Ford Automotive (or Ford himself) and its history, that should really impress upon you how badass Audrey is. Just about everyone on the expedition team fucking respects this woman —- as they should.

And you know what else is badass about Audrey? Never once does she feel like she has to explain away anything. She wants to run around in mechanic’s clothes (particularly at this time supremely incongruous)? Fuck yeah. She wants to show up at Whitmore’s looking like she walked off the cover of Harper’s or Vogue? Fuck yeah. She is a smart, confident woman who is wickedly competent (and passionate!) about what she does.

This is all really shiny. And then you throw in the fact that she is a woman of color in a position of serious authority in nineteen-fucking-fourteen. The Roaring Twenties and ‘loose women’ aren’t a thing yet. Women don’t have the vote yet. For fuck’s sake, diaphragms aren’t legal in the U.S. at this point and in certain states, you could be arrested for distributing contraceptives (please see Margaret Sanger in New York). And here, fuck your stereotypes, fuck your societal demands of silence and complicity —made worse by being a young woman of color— Audrey Ramirez does what the fuck she wants and will out class and out snark you while she does it.

tl;dr Audrey Ramirez is fucking fabulous and I want her to get more attention.

Like I needed that long-ass explanation to know why I’ve loved this woman since day fucking 1

My biggest advice to anyone wanting to make a character, whether they’re an OC for a fanwork or for a completely original creation, is to experiment like crazy! Have fun! Struggle! Get annoyed! Get even!! But most importantly don’t let yourself hold you back. I used to hold myself back from things - “oh, I can’t draw that kind of art, I’m not good at it! My style is too different!“ RUBBISH. Fight yourself! Wrestle your preconceptions about yourself and show them who’s the boss.

There are a lot of rules to character design, if you’d like to research it further - use of shapes, facial design, colour theory, different types of appeal - it’s a delicate science to create a truly memorable character. But making an OC just for fun? There’s only one rule, and the rule is GET ‘ER DONE YOURSELF!

This is really great advice and a good post. I’ve explored a few of the points in this comic in this post I made a few months ago, if anyone wants to read more on the subject.
