Liberal, Missouri was founded in 1880 as a town for only atheists. Residents published recruitment ads claiming it was ‘the only town of its size in the United States without a priest, preacher, church, saloon, God, Jesus, Hell, or Devil.’ The founder later converted to Christianity and wrote a book about the teachings of Jesus.
