The first Mario Bros was real, the second was a dream, the third was staged in a theater-ike-thing and the rest are staged as well; to either feed Mario’s ego or keep Bowser’s kids entertained.

They’re all actors and they play sports when they’re not “filming” sometimes. Mario’s a competitive bitch at all of those.
