When it comes to children’s animation creating multimillion dollar franchises in worlds of infinite imagination, surely gender equality should be a cert? Discuss.
PASS:
The Incredibles, Brave, Toy Story 3, A Bug’s Life
FAIL:
Up, WALL-E, Ratatouille, Finding Nemo, Monsters, Inc., Monsters University, Toy Story and Toy Story 2, Cars and Cars 2.
I love Pixar and this is upsetting but important to realize. I want them to do better!
Accept the good, demand better.
- Films can have more than one protagonist.
- Jessie is a protagonist in Toy Story
- Helen and Violet are protagonists in The Incredibles
- Dory is definitely a protagonist in Finding Nemo, plus she’s getting her own film!
- Cars has a female protagonist.
- Ratatouille has a female protagonist - and she’s the onl;y competent person there.
- Monsters Inc has Boo!
- In Wall-E there’s Eve, and we don’t even know if Wall-E is female or not.
- Bugs Life has many female protags in it.
- And the 2015 film Inside Out has 5 protaginists, and 3 are girls!
OH AND FINALLY
If you use the bechdel test to determine whether a film is good or not then you don’t deserve to be able to watch films.
“I’ve run out of things to be offended by so now I’m going to throw a fit over children’s media because it doesn’t always pass a stupidly outdated ‘test’ that judges whether or not it’s properly feminist!”
Newsflash: most of the films that pass the Bechdal test are genuinely terrible films. For fuck’s sake, TWILIGHT passed the stupid thing, while Harry Potter failed. Fifty Shades of Grey will pass with flying colors, judging by the book; meanwhile, the Hunger Games series technically fails.
And it’s such broad criteria, too, that it leaves a lot of room for shitty characters to get through. Like, literally the only requirement is “two women have to be given names and then talk about anything but men for at least five minutes.” So bland characters like Bella Swan, characters like Ana Steele who pretty much only exist for a man’s benefit? They pass the stupid test. Complex female characters like Hermione Granger, Katniss Everdeen, Buffy Summers, Grace Hart don’t pass.
So, basically, the Bechdal test is utter bullshit, and you shouldn’t use it to determine a movie’s worth.

THERE’S PORN THAT PASSES THAT USELESS IDIOTIC GODDAMN TEST, YOU GODDAMN FUCKING IDIOTS!
A better question is why do 50% have to be female? Why is cultural marxism a good thing? Why should the demographics of the audience impact the demographics of the entertainment? You complain about toy story yet 100% of the toy story audience is human…so why not complain that all the protagonists in toy story are not human?
Clearly these movies are already loved by boys and girls men and women alike so what’s the problem? Why must feminists reduce everything to social math? No actual inequality to complain about?
Are people seriously trying to find excuses to get mad at Pixar films now, and doing it poorly at that? (such as with ignoring multiple protagonists)
Golly gee whizz, ‘Wall-E’, a movie with barely any dialogue at all and that is about two completely genderless objects trying to save a plant failed the Bechdel Test? I am fucking gob-smacked.
