Canada Claims Authority to Censor Your Internet Searches →

socialjust-ish:

el-presidente-deadpool:

thinksquad:

The Canadian Supreme Court today ruled the country has the authority to demand Google censor and remove links to certain web pages or online content.

The idea that governments can force Google to deindex links to pages is unfortunately not new (see the European Union’s “right to be forgotten”). What matters internationally in this case is the government is forcing Google to remove links from searches regardless of where the Internet user is. That is to say: Canada is demanding the authority to censor the internet outside of its physical borders and control what people who are not Canadian citizens can find online.

How would one go about filing and injunction against a country.

Because i totally could sue canada over this

Oh my god is this a spin of a fucking spin, good job on being possibly the most dishonest post I’ve seen today thinksquad. Really makes you think about what kind of monkeys run your writing staff.

A Canadian company (Company A) made a product. Another Canadian company (Company B) was buying their product in bulk, slapping a new brand name onto that, and selling it at a markup. It was, and still is blatant theft and copyright/trademark infringement. Imagine if Coca-Cola was being bought in bulk and resold as “Nuka Cola”. That’s what’s happening here.

Company A sued Company B. Company B then left the country so that jurisdiction could not apply, and also released the entire technical specifications for the product, so anyone who googled ‘Company A’ would get an article saying ‘how to make [Company A] materials’. Company B continues to sell its literally stolen goods

Company A then goes to the courts, and says “Hey, they’re selling it online and literally destroying our business, can we stop that?”

Courts say yes, serve an injunction to Google saying “Hey, these guys are literally stealing, please take it down.” Google cooperates, but contests it for freedom of expression concerns. They also only want to take it down in Canada.

Company A goes “Okay but… we sell the product internationally, and have international copyright/trademarks, just like how Coca Cola does. Please take the ads down from US/EU/Asia as well”

The court literally says, in its decision: “This is not an order to remove speech that, on its face, engages freedom of expression values, it is an order to de-index websites that are in violation of several court orders,“ the decision reads.” Along with a myriad of other technical details that make it clear this is not a censorship issue, but a literal ‘stop fucking stealing and skirting the bounds of technicality’ case.

Google says “Okay, cool, we’ll figure out what we have to do”

You fucks: CENSORSHIP!!!! INJUNCTION CANADA!!!
