My biggest advice to anyone wanting to make a character, whether they’re an OC for a fanwork or for a completely original creation, is to experiment like crazy! Have fun! Struggle! Get annoyed! Get even!! But most importantly don’t let yourself hold you back. I used to hold myself back from things - “oh, I can’t draw that kind of art, I’m not good at it! My style is too different!“ RUBBISH. Fight yourself! Wrestle your preconceptions about yourself and show them who’s the boss.
There are a lot of rules to character design, if you’d like to research it further - use of shapes, facial design, colour theory, different types of appeal - it’s a delicate science to create a truly memorable character. But making an OC just for fun? There’s only one rule, and the rule is GET ‘ER DONE YOURSELF!
This is really great advice and a good post. I’ve explored a few of the points in this comic in this post I made a few months ago, if anyone wants to read more on the subject.

I still have a hard time believing that wasn’t the real Pinkie here.
You know those whiners who complain about Pinkie being more of a ADD freak than at the start of the series and how annoying it is to them?
And you know those other guys who say the eps are not in chronologic order?
