POKEDDEXY CHALLENGE DAY 13
-Favorite Normal Type-
#127 Porygon, #233 Porygon2 & #474 Porygon-Z, the Virtual Pokémon
I am very happy to announce that today, Friday the 13th, I will be covering my VERY favorite Pokémon of all time.
Porygon has the honor of being the first Pokémon I’ve drew for this challenge that is not based on a living being. Porygon, aswell as it’s evolutions Porygon2 and Porygon-Z, are 3D models. Regular Porygon is presumably supposed to be a paper crane, rendered with very limited software, hence why it has a very low polygon count. As technology advances, said software becomes capable of rendering objects with a much higher polygon count, leading to the very smooth Porygon2. Porygon2 is not just visually more advanced than Porygon, but it exhibits motions that were not programmed, ergo, it’s capable of learning and adapting. Regular Porygon can only execute very basic motions. Again, lets move a bit forward in time. Now people are creating their own mods for existing programs. Licensed software is being patched to use all of the features (without paying), sometimes causing bugs. This is what Porygon-Z is. A Porygon2 that has been upgraded with unlicensed software of dubious origin. It exhibits erratic behaviour and glitches.
The Porygon line is based on technology, and it’s rapid advances, itself. Porygon-Z is the only fully evolved Pokémon that can be obtained at level 1, after all. Porygon is, in a way, like the Pokémon games themselfes: the original two titles, Red and Blue, could be quite glitchy and the combat system was unpolished. Porygon is a rough and unpolished product. Porygon2 was introduced in Gold and Silver, where there were significantly less glitches and the combat system was a lot more polished (like Porygon2). Porygon-Z was introduced in Diamond and Pearl, where some other issues with the system were improved (physical/special split most notably). Porygon-Z may be a reference to people hacking the games to obtain Pokémon/items they shouldn’t have access to.
But enough of that, let’s get to Porygon in the games. The line, as a whole, is quite interesting. Most notable is that Porygon2 and Porygon-Z act completely different and can stand their own ground.
Porygon2 is very defensive. Access to Eviolite and Recover (and to some extent Trace) ensure that. It can also dish out damage with Discharge, Tri Attack and Ice Beam. Due to it’s low speed it’s also an excellent Trick Room setter, that can send a Taunt back at the user via Magic Coat.
Porygon-Z on the other hand, is VERY agressive. It’s base Special Attack of 135 and Adaptability boosted Tri Attack are devastating. It also gets Nasty Plot to boost its Special Attack beyond the stars. Stuff like Dark Pulse and Psychic (only to name two moves out of it’s wide arsenal) gives it great coverage! But do keep in mind it’s more fragile than Porygon2, making it quite the glass cannon.
Regular Porygon can in theory do everything Porygon2 can, but on a lower performance scale.
Now those would be some great reasons why I’d pick Porygon as my very favorite Pokémon. It is however not why I’ve loved Porygon since waaaaaaay back in Gen I. The true reason why I love Porygon is this:
Porygon had some of the funniest animations in the old N64 games. Porygon had a certain charm that made it my favorite Pokémon waaay back when.
Damnit Josef all time favorites are on day 31 -.-
