bronys are bad because they sexualize a show meant for kids. anyone whose ever written, drawn, or enjoyed pornography for homestuck (featuring children/preteens) harry potter (targeted to kids) or literally any anime that can possibly be named is obvs exempt from this because fuck you is why

I have NOTHING but good things to say about the folks I’ve had the pleasure of talking to, hanging out with and calling my friends in the My Little Pony fan community.  When it comes down to it, everyone is here because of one reason- they like the tiny horse cartoon.  Bottom line. I’ve never run into a single instance of the legion creepy, pervy, fedora-wearing, neckbeard misogynist bullies that are claimed to populate every pony-friendly website and convention.

Quite the contrary, I’ve had a wonderful time every step of the way and I appreciate EVERYONE I’ve joined along the ride- bronies and nor/mlp/eople, artists and musicians , VAs and staff, men, women, kids and adults, the horse famous and the horse infamous. I don’t regret a single moment or knowing a single person.

Except maybe M.A. Larson. He owes me beers and until that alcoholic debt is paid, there can be no peace.

When you’re neck-deep in a community, it can be hard to see beyond the flaws and drama.  But I can assure you, none of that is endemic to the My Little Pony fandom.  Delve into the comments and community hubs for Supernatural, Game of Thrones, Atheism, Cigar aficionados, comic book geeks, fitness fanatics or Disney pin collecting whatever-they’re-calleds and you’ll find yourself in a wretched hive of drama, back-stabbing and over-inflated self worth to rival the most spaghetti-drenched Pony meetup.  Humans don’t always play well with each other- in fact, it’s some kind of miracle that we’re NOT pummeling each other with sharp rocks at this very moment.

But out of all those communities and all the tens of thousands more, ours seems to do the best at maintaining itself. Yes, our community occasionally flares up with the drama of a thousand dying stars.  But we always seem to come back to a place of equilibrium…eques….tra…la. There’s a horse pun in there somewhere.

I LIKE this community, I like the people in it.  And when compared to the arguments and upheaval of, say, the Star Wars fandom right now?  I’ll take Personal Tiny Ponies every time.  Twilight gets wings?  Pffft.  At least she’s not voiced by Hayden Christensen and chock fulla midichlorians. We got it good around these parts.

if you like ponies, then AWESOME!  I like them too!  Welcome aboard.  Draw some horses, write some fic, post on a message board, attend a convention.  You’re weird?  Hey, I’m weird too!  You like it for different reasons than me?  Cool!  It’s a big goddamn tent.

Being a fan of something isn’t a point of pride- no more than successfully navigating your pants every morning (Go you, by the way!) But neither is it a source of shame.  We are not defined by a cartoon we watch  YOU are not defined by stereotype and caricature on Tumblr. Revel in the thing you love, find comfort and joy in it. Take the best from it, the part that speaks to you and don’t allow anyone to  take that away.  Most of all never let them make you feel lesser because of it.

I’m glad you’re here and it’s my great joy to call you my friend.
