thoughtmonger: Most hated pokemons of each generation?

:

That’s a fun topic. I would just name them all and leave it at that, like I did with my favourites, but I think a list of hated pokémon deserves a little more explanation.

Gen 1: Flareon

image

I wouldn’t dislike Flareon so much if it weren’t for Vaporeon and Jolteon making it look bad, but the stats don’t lie.

A higher attack than special attack stat on a fire type? Jeez, man, that’s a red flag even these days, and this was before Gen 4, meaning that all fire moves were special moves! Flareon got exactly 0 benefit from its best stat if, like every single kid in the world, you assumed fire pokémon would be good at using fire moves. It’s especially tragic because, compared to most other types, there weren’t (and still aren’t, really) that many fire pokémon to begin with, so Flareon is just a bunch of missed potential disguised as a pokémon. I myself used a fire stone on my first Eevee. I was sorely disappointed by the outcome, and even though they made Flareon more useful in future installents, my grudge has never faded.

Gen 2: Unown

image

You all know what’s wrong with these. As much as the TV show and the movies like to pretend they’re something mystical and special… they’re really not. Their stats are mediocre at best and they only learn one move. Like, ever.

Two installments in the series, Gens 2 and 4, made a sidequest out of collecting all 26 of them. And I did it! In both! And what do you get? In Johto, a handful of items of dubious usefulness. In Sinnoh, the ability to catch Hippopotas, whose evolved form can just be caught in the wild. The Ruins of Alph and the Solaceon Ruins can both go to hell.

Gen 3: Feebas

image

I was going to put Castform here, but at least that horrible pokémon is just given to you. With Feebas, you have to work for your mediocrity.

In Gen 3, Feebas appears on exactly 6 tiles, somewhere in the river on Route 119, leaving you to painstakingly fish on every single one, and even then there’s no guarantee you’ll actually encounter it, as other pokémon can still appear as well. In Gen 4, Feebas can be found in a similar fashion by fishing in exactly 4 tiles in a lake on the bottom floor of the Mt. Coronet cave. Some people say its evolution, Milotic, makes it worth the effort, but Gen 3 was full of other water types that overshadow it greatly, leaving Feebas as nothing but a novelty pokémon that’s unnecessarily difficult to get your hands on.

Gen 4: Combee

image

Remember those honey trees from Generation 4? To get certain pokémon, you had to buy honey, put it on an orange-coloured tree, then wait over 6 hours, but no longer than 24 or the tree would reset. Then when you go back to the tree, a pokémon would appear. Now, here’s a couple fun facts:

  1. Combee has a 32% chance of appearing at these trees.
  2. Only 12.5% of all Combee are female.
  3. Only female Combee can evolve into the at least somewhat usable Vespiquen.

Doing the math, this means that if you’re looking for a Vespiquen, you’ll have exactly 4% chance of encountering the pokémon you need once that entire process is finished. Does that sound like fun to you? Thought not.

Gen 5: Klink

image

I was late to Gen 5. Like, really late. I played it like last year. It came out in a time when my interest in pokémon had been faltering a bit. None of the new pokémon seemed that special, the game looked and played pretty much the same as Gen 4 except for some new 3D environments and those novelty 3-pokémon battles, the storyline with Team Plasma struck me as more than a little stupid and still doesn’t hold my interest. Gen 5 simply failed to impress.

That said, having played it now… it’s still my least favourite generation. You have to understand, Klink doesn’t do anything specific that pisses me off like the rest of the pokémon on this list. To me, it’s just the crown jewel on the mountain of lame that was Gen 5. Boring design, uninspired concept, and not even that useful to boot.

Gen 6: Furfrou

image

This was probably the toughest choice. Gen 6 had a collection of great pokémon across the board, though there were quite few, compared to other generations. Looking at Gen 5, it seems like they swapped quantity for quality. The only standout is Furfrou, who doesn’t really seem like it belongs here.

Furfrou has nothing special about it. It’s just your run-of-the-mill normal type. The only unique thing about it is that you can bring it to a salon in Lumiose City and get it a personalized horrible haircut, which I guess is in theme with all the player customization that XY introduced and that ORAS swiftly got rid off. If that’s the only reason it has for being in the game, then I don’t really see why they bothered to put it in at all. If it had been introduced in any other generation, I probably wouldn’t mind it. It certainly compares favourably to the likes of Stantler or Audino, but next to the stellar lineup that was Gen 6, it just falls flat. Furfrou doesn’t fail due to its own shortcomings, but due to the quality of its peers.

Okay, that’s enough nerdery.

Oh and I’m the dweeb? >:Y
