if you aren’t mexican/chicanx DON’T wear sugar skull makeup. you’re making a mockery and a costume of a holiday that’s beautiful and celebrated for those living and dead and it’s a very serious thing. it’s not like halloween, there’s no creepiness or scariness or commercial gain. so please don’t twist dia de los muertos into that. the makeup isn’t just for the fun of it, and it isn’t without meaning. it doesn’t matter how well versed you are in the history of it, or if you just want to use it as a “fashion statement”- it’s disrespectful and not yours to take.
I’m white (with some Native American) and I’m studying Spanish in school, we are taught “Spain Spanish” along with “Mexican Spanish” and every year around the day of the dead (technically 2 days) we all study about it and learn about it… We do draw skulls and design things, my teacher has sugar skulls, we celebrate as students who (mostly) understand the celebration. It’s not a time for mourning, nor to make into a fashion statement: UNLESS you are celebrating the life after death of the people who have left us by decorating with marigolds and their favourite food/ possessions of their lives. It can be a fashion statement, but only for those who don’t disrespect it and actually know what November 1st-2nd is all about.
no… it cannot be a fashion statement. you aren’t mexican or chicanx you shouldn’t be speaking over someone who is. regardless of what you learned in school, that doesn’t make you an authority on this. listen to the people who’s culture this is and respect it- there is a difference between learning about it and understanding it, and appropriating and making it into a fashion statement. it’s seriously disrespectful for you to claim that honoring your loved ones and celebrating them could possibly correlate to a fashion statement. again, don’t speak over those of us who have it deeply engrained in our culture just because you learned about it in school.

The DAY OF THE DEAD can be celebrated by anyone who believes that the dead should be celebrated rather than mourned. It is a fantastic holiday were we remember our dead with joy rather than with pain.
And you want to take that away because OH CULTURAL APPROPIATION? FUCK OFF, seriously the day of the deead is basically a huge PARTY you moron. Anyone and everyone is invited and you should know better than to try to isolate your own culture. Because you know, that’s what mexicans need, to be shoved to the side due to cultural appropiation bs.

Also, for being so “OH SO INFORMED” you compltely missed the point of the tradition, not only that but you also ignored that it’s not solely a MEXICAN festivity but rather a central/south american one. They celebrate it in Brazil (I’m half brazilian, I’ve been there) and they also celebrate it in Spain.
So, if you want to dress up and have a party and remember the people that’s left us with a celebration, joy and fond memories GO AHEAD AND DO IT. Don’t let no unculturized cunt on tumblr tell you what to do ok?
Celebrate el Día de los Muertos!
Día de muertos is a festival that reminds us of our own mortality, a tradition that brings us peace about this particular subject.
Think about it, while alive you see all the people celebrating, being happy, telling death to go sit on it. There’s this unspoken agreement that goes something like “Hey you fuckers, life is so wonderful and we’re having a great time, right? If I die please keep it going!” and that is what makes us face death without fear: knowing our loved ones will keep enjoying life.
The calaveras are there as an iconic representation of death, the reminder of that human trait called mortality. All the decoration on them is ENTIRELY aesthetical. Put the damn skulls on shirts, on your phones, on your walls, on your face, whatever. We already commercialize all that shit HARD around that time of the year anyway - .-
