like, what if they were defending someone who was being accused of rape or murder or whatever, and during the trial, due to new evidence or something, they realize “oh dang, my client is actually guilty” so they stop trying to defend?

I think at that point they just try to get the least amount of prison years as possible or try to post bail for their client or something

At that point it depends on the lawyer’s ethics, since some think of such scenarios in advance and include what they should and/or will do in their contracts, which also says when and how they get paid (some charge before the trial, some only if they win and such).
